Make a Home Theater Projector With an Old LCD Monitor and an Overhead Projector

The title says basically exactly what is going on but you have to see it in action to get the full effect. It is basically an LCD screen duct taped to an overhead projector but I’ll be damned if it works. It seems so obvious to put the two together, if you’ve been into DIY home theater, but the idea never once crossed my mind.

I really have no idea how many lumens an overhead projector outputs but you can get 15″ LCD panels that have incredibly high resolutions. You could technically have a WUXGA monitor, mostly put in laptops, that does 192×1200 making a full HD 1080p overhead projector. You’ll also notice the corners are cut off due to the shape of the projection area but they probably wouldn’t even be in the way should you be projecting a widescreen image.

This is such a great idea I think I’m going to try it myself. Don’t you worry, I’ll post pics and a walkthrough when I do get around to making mine, I just need to get my hands on an old overhead projector.

I should also get into custom made boxes and such; a full home made theater projector. I’ve done it before and would highly recommend trying. Granted, the time you invest in making a DIY projector is worth much more than what you get out of it but I learned so much about projectors from my first DIY that it I didn’t feel bad about the time I spent.
